Emperor Augustus, originally known as Gaius Octavius, was the first Roman emperor, reigning from 27 BC until he died in AD 14. Under Augustus's reign, the Roman world experienced a period of imperial peace known as the Pax Romana or Pax Augusta. Despite ongoing frontier wars and the civil war known as the "Year of the Four Emperors," the empire enjoyed relative freedom from large-scale conflicts for over two centuries.
Born into a wealthy equestrian family, Augustus inherited Julius Caesar's name, estate, and the loyalty of his legions. He formed the Second Triumvirate with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus to defeat Caesar's assassins. Following their victory, the Triumvirate divided the Roman Republic among themselves and ruled as de facto dictators.
After the dissolution of the Second Triumvirate, Augustus restored the outward appearance of a free republic while maintaining autocratic authority. Power was officially vested in the Roman Senate, executive magistrates, and legislative assemblies, but Augustus held lifetime tenure as commander-in-chief, tribune, and censor.
